Charles Friend's Home
This historic spot is located about 2 miles west of Oakland, Maryland.
This is what the marker states: "George Washington stopped here Sept. 26 1784 on his trip to determine a feasible passage between the Potomac and the Ohio for a canal or easy portage between these rivers as a passage to the western territory."
Charles Friend, who is remembered and honored by this marker, was the brother of John Friend, Sr., (Old John) who is honored with the distinction of being the first white man to make his residence in (what is today) Garrett County, Maryland. Pat Thompson is the 4th great granddaughter of Old John.
