This is believed to be a family photo of the David Custer family. The young man is without doubt Emanuel Custer III. The lady next to him (third from left) is believed to be his first wife Rebecca (Friend) Custer, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Kinsey) Friend.

David Custer raised his family in Bittinger, Maryland . Emanuel would become a Hoyes, Maryland Farmer.

Emanuel was a member of Company D. 3rd Maryland Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade, as were many young men from the present day Garrett County area.

Emanuel Custer's eldest son, David Sheridan Custer would marry Judge David Harrison "Harry" Friend's daughter Minnie May Friend.

Son Homer Delphia Custer would marry Francis Maude Friend, (daughter of Joab and Mary Jeanette Friend).

Son William Arthur Custer would marry Hallie Florence Friend (daughter of Asa Belle Friend and Jennie Frazenbaker)

Daughter Alice Custer would marry Willie Sharpless Friend (son of Henry Edwin Friend and Sarah Elizabeth Blackburn).



 

David Sheridan "Bud" Custer (12/3/1861 - 10/10/1948) was the eldest son of Emanuel Custer and Rebecca Friend.

Bud would marry Judge David Harrison "Harry" Friend's daughter, Minnie May Friend.

Bud Custer was a Friendsville, Maryland businessman involved with a local produce and furniture store, The Friendsville Milling Company, a director with the Garret County Telephone Company, a director of the Penn-Garrett Coal Mining Company, and a director with the First National Bank of Friendsville (The bank is today the FFAA's National Headquarters)

 

 

Alice Custer, daughter of Emanuel Custer and Mary Virginia DeWitt would marry Willie Sharpless Friend (son of Henry Edwin Friend and Sarah Elizabeth Blackburn).
